The Broken Chord
Sounds emitted from four speakers investigate two perceptual issues. The first temporal and geographic displacement. Field recordings from various locations in the park will be played through the speakers. The listener will hear different parts of the park along with their present location simultaneously. The second issue is aural perception. Four separate tones, one for each stereo speaker set-up, are also sounding along with the field recordings. Taken individually, the tones constitute a linear melodic phrase. However, their generation is of a distinct harmonic / vertical unit. By standing in a proper place, the listener perceives the harmonic chord, but by virtue of walking through hears the horizontal, linear movement of the tones.
